A number of different drugs are marketed to help reduce the symptoms of BPH. Most drugs prescribed for BPH fall into one of two categories; alpha blockers and 5a-reductase inhibitors. Unfortunately both of these classes of drugs carry undesireable side-effects. Alpha blockers act by relaxing smooth muscles and can cause hypotension and respiratory issues. 5a-reductase inhibitors act on the hormone; DHT and can result in loss of libido, and cause impotence or ejaculatory problems. In any case, prolonged use of pharmaceuticals is not cost-effective and therefore is not the approach of choice for many men.
